Best Power Rack For Home Gym Workouts 2021

 What is a power rack?

A power rack is essential for leg days, shoulders, and pull days. A power rack is a cage that allows you to do movements like squatting, overhead shoulder press, rack pulls, deadlifts, bent over rows, and more. It is also known as a squat cage and is in almost every gym. Most gyms actually have multiple of these because they are so popular for both bodybuilding and powerlifting. These are also very safe because they have bars on the side which can catch your barbell if you fail on an exercise like the squat.

How much do power racks cost?

A good power rack can cost upwards of $2000 for a nice commercial grade piece of equipment. A home gym power rack will probably be less than $1000 but the materials won't be as durable and you may not be able to use as much weight as you could on the commercial grade power rack. A home gym is essentially not the super high quality cage you find at a high end gym but it's also gonna cost less than $500 for a single power rack with no add ons.

What is the difference between a squat rack and a power rack?

While they are similar, there is one main difference. A power rack has 4 vertical bars with 2 horizontal safety bars. A squat rack has 2 vertical bars and little notches the extend horizontally to hold the bar. With the squat rack they have two horizontal bars near the ground to catch the weight if you fail but you can't adjust it's height like you can in a power rack. A squat rack can't hold as much weight and aren't as safe as the power rack. If you fail on a squat and are outside the bounds of the safety bars then you are likely to get injured. In a power rack cage, you can't physically step outside of the cage because the bar is trapped inside. Some squat racks on Amazon say they are power cages but if they don't have 4 parallel bars, I wouldn't consider them to be a power cage.

However, squat racks are a lot cheaper and don't take up as much space as a power rack. For example, a decent squat rack can cost $200+ but you can find great squat racks like this one for $151. There are some other great squat racks that we recommend you take a look at.

Do I need a power rack for home gym?

Yes! You should either get a power rack or squat rack for your home gym! It's gonna be so helpful because it allows you to safely do presses like benchpress, overhead press, squatting, pulls and more. If you don't have one, then you should highly consider getting a quality power rack. If you are tight on space then maybe opt for a squat rack but if you want the best home gym then use a power rack. Now, let's get into the best power racks for your home gym. You can do a bunch of free weight exercises with a power rack. You should check out My Fitness System for some ideas.
